Integrate art works into children’s recreation area as an alternative to procuring traditional play equipment.
Client: Hyde Housing Association Artist: Christopher Rutter and Evelyn Bennett Architects: BPTW architects Local Authority: Lewisham Borough Council
Background
The recreation area is envisaged as a space used by young children and their parents and those wanting a quiet, enclosed and natural area. The artists proposed remodelling the area to take advantage of the existing trees and foliage to form a wooded ‘clearing’ in which would be sited a sculptural work which could be used by children as a play piece for climbing on and running through.
Concept
The sculpture has been designed to allow children to climb up it. The work is 2.5 metres high, cast in fibreglass/resin, painted in cellulose paints and heavily lacquered. It needs minimal maintenance apart from periodical washing. The work has no sharp edges and is surrounded by ‘Safagrass’ protective matting. This rubberise matting allows grass to grow through it and can be mown over. It complies with British and European standards. The seating area is adjacent to herb beds containing hardy, low maintenance perennial herbs such as Lavender, Thyme, Rosemary and Sage. These provide fragrance for much of the year. |
