London Underground Platform for Art

As part of their Platform for Art scheme, London Underground approached Plan with a brief for art for Bethnal Green and Piccadilly Circus Tube Stations.

Client: London Underground
Artists: Nick Hughes, Ashton Keiditsch and Mary Anne Francis
Local Authority: Tower Hamlets and Westminster

Concept

Bethnal Green - The hoardings upon the back walls on both the East and Westbound platforms were given a burst of vibrancy and creative energy through art by two Plan photographers Nick Hughes and Ashton Keiditsch.

Piccadilly Circus - Plan’s relationship with London Underground continued with an installation of a series of images by the concept artist Mary Anne Francis at Piccadilly Circus Underground Station. At Piccadilly Circus, the works selected were taken from the artist’s ‘Cover Series.’ This key piece of work features the artist reading from a number of texts taken from different genres of writing; it forms part of Francis’ on-going enquiry into how human beings construct identities for themselves through cultural references.
