Following a long design process involving close collaboration with both Wandsworth Council and the client’s engineers, Galliford Try, Dallas Pierce Quintero Architects have produced a design for a major artwork taking the shape of the louvres at Wandsworth Riverside Quarter.
The opportunity for the project focussed on the louvres attached to the façade of the energy centre within the development. The design addresses the theme of ‘osier;’ this is a type of plant whose flexible twigs (called "withies") are commonly used in basketry. They were grown on the site during the early modern period. The project explores the sculptural properties of the louvres to achieve a subtle and beautiful feature within the built environment of Wandsworth Town Centre.
DPQ will be using a timber charring technique to stencil the design onto the louvres; there are only a handful of charred timber buildings in the UK and we believe this is the first time this process has been used to introduce a piece of design onto a building.
The energy centre will not be built until March 2013, at which point the louvres will be installed.
