Neighbourhood plans form part of the coalition government’s policies to empower local people to influence the way their neighbourhood evolves. Plan Projects has teamed up with Euan Mills, who developed a detailed Neighbourhood Plan for Chatsworth Road in Hackney, to work with local residents to devise a plan for Well Street.
Well Street divides into a number of distinct character areas. The primary study area for the neighbourhood plan will be the area including and around the retail strip at the northern end of the street, where it meets Morning Lane. This mini-town centre fails to serve its catchment area properly and suffers from poor traffic regulation and a worn out public realm.
Working with a neighbourhood action team drawn from the local community, Plan Projects will address this apparent example of market failure. We have devised a work flow, now accepted by the action team, that will take the Neighbourhood Plan from creation of the Neighbourhood Forum to adoption by the Hackney Council.
