The installation of a major piece of work by the Northumberland based artist, Colin Rose brings to a close the Public Art Strategy developed by Plan Projects at the Great Baddow urban extension close to the Essex town of Chelmsford.

The objectives of our strategy were to link the new extension into the existing village community. Colin Rose responded to this by creating a form that directly echoes the form and personality of St Mary’s Church steeple. The steeple is one of the few major cultural landmarks in the area and can be seen from different vantage points within the development. The artist writes, ‘This form also relates to the central point of the green by reference to traditional forms of spires as well as many traditional oblique forms.

In Urban Design terms, the presence of the sculpture also creates a landmark that will rebalance the layout of the village in favour of the new development, providing people with a place for local people to congregate.
