13/01/2009 Nick Turvey’s Sculpture, Eidola, installed at 30 Crown Place

Major project 'Eidola' for Greycoat Estates which Plan has been working on with sculptor Nick Turvey since the beginning of 2008 at 30 Crown Place is now installed.

The major project for Greycoat Estates that Plan has been working on with the sculptor Nick Turvey since the beginning of 2008 at 30 Crown Place has now been installed. The finished work, entitled Eidola, consists of three tiers of polyurethane lenses suspended on wires attached to a steel structure embedded into the ceiling. The work measures 670 x 340 x 120 cm.

The brief was to produce a visually powerful form that would simultaneously conceal the view through one of the ground floor windows of an ugly electricity substation and develop a meaningful and intelligent relationship with the architecture of the tower itself, designed originally by Stephen Cherry of Horden Cherry Lee architects.

The ambition the artist set out to achieve at the start of the project was to  ‘introduce ephemeral, transient phenomena into the hard fabric of the city.’ Drawing inspiration from the effect of rain falling on canals in Venice, he produced a design that he describes as a ‘cloud of giant lenses’.
