Plan has been asked by the Chancery Lane Association to put together an Area Cultural Strategy as part of their ambition to introduce significant changes to the character and identity of the street. The cultural programme we envisage will form part of an overall urban design re-think encompassing the pavements, fragments of public open space along its length and the street itself. The ACS will look at the full panoply of cultural activity and, in devising suitable ideas, we will be working with key partners in the area including Lincolns Inn, the Law Society and King’s College, London.
The Maughan Library: A key cultural anchor
The opportunity for change in Chancery Lane has been brought about by some important changes both to its context and use. The resurgent Holborn area has created a new dynamism to the north, the arrival earlier in the decade of the Maughan Library combined with a more diverse tenant mix in the street has created a significant change to the ‘through put’ of people and the arrival of the European Commercial Court at a site immediately to the East of Chancery Lane will create new desire lines. These and other shifts have made it timely for the street to diversify its economy and reinvent itself as a more convivial, attractive and adaptable place.
