25/04/10 Appointment to deliver an Area Cultural Strategy for Salford City Council

Plan Projects has been asked to put together an Area Cultural Strategy for Pendleton, an area of Salford that in the future will offer a beautiful and unique place for people to bring up families, create new businesses and learn new skills. Our strategy forms part of an ambitious PFI designed to regenerate the existing physical infrastructure and housing.

Pendleton lies at the heart of Central Salford and is an area of huge opportunity. Plan Projects has been asked by Salford City Council to develop an Area Cultural Strategy for Pendleton; an area that will offer a beautiful and unique place for people to bring up families, create new businesses and learn new skills. Our strategy forms part of an ambitious PFI (Private Finance Initiative) designed to create a new Pendleton, by regenerating existing housing, building new homes and improving the physical infrastructure.

Plan Projects is committed to the idea that cultural activity and understanding has a strategic role to play in regeneration. Salford shares this view, not only for its prestige schemes, but also for places like Pendleton that are not yet household names. These areas are as important to the rebirth of Salford as the Quays, perhaps more so. Pendleton, both in terms of its location and as a home to over 13,000 proud and passionate residents, is truly the heart of Salford.

Ideal city
Traces of the 'ideal' city are visible

Plan Projects has provided a way of looking at Pendleton from a cultural perspective. As a result, regenerators have been able to see aspects of Pendleton afresh. Our work has drawn attention to how culture may play a role in the area’s new beginning and its connections with the wider cultural life of both Manchester and Salford. Our initial studies, involving extensive consultation with resident communities, confirms our belief that Pendleton should exist at the centre of life in Salford, contributing strong and diverse retailing, high quality homes for new and existing residents, underpinned by a thriving, home grown cultural experience.
